Dr. Ola Brown’s Five-Step Plan to Transform Nigeria Through Innovation

Dr. Ola Brown, a prominent speaker at The Platform Nigeria on 1st May 2023, emphasized the importance of innovation, collaboration, and discipline in transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape. Drawing from biblical examples, she highlighted the need for Christians to actively participate in innovation as a means to create personal wealth, which ultimately translates into national wealth.

Dr. Brown outlined five key areas that can help Nigeria innovate and prosper:

  1. Working in Government: She urged talented individuals to consider joining the government to contribute to state capacity. Citing examples of successful countries like China and Russia, where state-owned companies make up a significant portion of their stock exchanges, she stressed that people of capacity are needed to work for the state.
  2. Collaborating with Government: Dr. Brown called for private companies to collaborate with the government in creating policies that address their needs. She explained that many politicians enter government without a clear understanding of business requirements, and it is the responsibility of the private sector to influence and inform the government on what is needed.
  3. Prioritising Education and Learning: Dr. Brown debunked the myth that successful companies are founded by school dropouts. She revealed that 95% of billion-dollar company founders have a BSC, and continuous learning is essential for innovation. Both the public and private sectors need to invest in education and promote a culture of lifelong learning.
  4. Investing in Healthcare: Emphasizing the strong link between innovation, productivity, and healthcare, Dr. Brown encouraged investment in the healthcare sector. She cited examples of the UK and the US, where healthcare systems are among the largest employers, and highlighted the need for Nigeria to develop its healthcare infrastructure to support productivity.
  5. Discipline: Dr. Brown stressed that talent and wisdom alone are not enough for success. Discipline, or the ability to do things one may not necessarily enjoy, is crucial for achieving exceptional results. She encouraged finding a balance between passion and profitability, and creating strong connections to foster new business opportunities.

Dr. Brown concluded her talk by reminding the audience that excellence is the best tool for evangelism and that hard work is a risk worth taking. She encouraged Nigerians to believe in their potential and actively participate in the process of innovation and collaboration, both within companies and across sectors, to unlock Nigeria’s true potential.
